Our Mission
PocketPC Controls is dedicated to preserving and documenting the rich history of mobile computing’s formative years. We focus on the era when Windows CE, Pocket PC, and Windows Mobile devices shaped the foundations of modern smartphones.
What We Cover
Device History
From the original Compaq iPAQ to the final Windows Mobile handsets, we document the hardware that defined an era. Our detailed reviews and retrospectives capture the specifications, innovations, and cultural impact of these pioneering devices.
Software Development
The tools and techniques of PocketPC development—eMbedded Visual C++, .NET Compact Framework, and the Windows Mobile SDK—represent important chapters in software engineering history. We preserve this knowledge for historians and curious developers alike.
Industry Evolution
We trace the competitive landscape: Palm vs. Pocket PC, the rise of HTC, carrier partnerships like O2’s XDA series, and the enterprise dominance of Symbol/Motorola. Understanding these dynamics illuminates how the smartphone industry emerged.
Our Approach
- Accuracy: We cross-reference multiple sources and original documentation
- Depth: Technical details matter; we don’t oversimplify
- Context: Every device and technology existed within a broader ecosystem
- Preservation: Screenshots, specifications, and development resources are archived
History
PocketPC Controls was originally established in 2003 as a resource for PocketPC developers and enthusiasts. After a period of dormancy, the site has been revived in 2025 with a new focus on historical documentation and preservation.
The original site served the active PocketPC community with software reviews, development tutorials, and device comparisons. Today, we honor that legacy by ensuring this important chapter of computing history remains accessible.
